Argos developer documentation

CLI

The alpha CLI owns the supported login, repository initialization, controlled Codex launch, human review prompt, and verification flow.

Install

Install the public alpha package with Node.js 18.18 or newer. The package includes the argos CLI, Codex adapter, bootstrap, bounded reader, hooks, and verifier.

bash
npm install --global @argosbyaurevon/codex-apply-patch-adapter@alpha
argos --help

argos login

Purpose: create the short-lived human session used for provisioning and REVIEW decisions.

bash
argos login

Automatic behavior: browser OAuth with explicit consent, PKCE S256, state and signed identity validation, and an existing organization-access check. The callback uses 127.0.0.1:43123; an occupied port fails closed. Use argos logout to remove local human credentials without changing browser sessions or agent keys.

argos init

Purpose: bind the current Git repository to the existing Argos alpha control path.

bash
cd /path/to/repository
argos init

Automatic behavior: repository detection; project, agent, workflow, and scoped-key provisioning; isolated Codex configuration; readiness plan; hook smoke test; and verifier availability check.

Initialization is idempotent and stores its configuration outside the repository. It guarantees no repository file changes during successful initialization.

argos run

Purpose: freeze a Task contract, launch controlled Codex, collect human decisions, and run independent verification when Codex exits.

bash
argos run \
--objective "Add password reset rate limiting." \
  --expected "src/auth/password-reset/**" \
  --review "src/shared/**" \
  --protected "src/auth/session/**"

The CLI detects existing typecheck, test, lint, and build package scripts and includes them in the frozen deterministic plan. Required checks that cannot run prevent VERIFIED.

Local state

LocationPurpose
~/.argos/session.jsonHuman session, stored with user-only permissions.
~/.argos/repositories/<key>.jsonRepository identity and scoped execution configuration.
~/.argos/repositories/<key>/plansFrozen Task verification plans.
~/.argos/codex-alphaGenerated isolated Codex home, hooks, and run state.

Secrets and adapter state remain outside the Git repository. Do not commit or copy this directory into a project.
